- Press release from US embassy Montevideo: The United States, United Kingdom and Canada extend their deep gratitude to the Uruguayan government for successfully supporting the repatriations of travelers who were on board cruise ships in the South Atlantic Ocean when the COVID-19 pandemic reached South America. Uruguay allowed cruise ships to dock at the Port of Montevideo and provided a humanitarian corridor for passengers to be transported safely to commercial and charter flights departing from Carrasco International Airport without putting the Uruguayan public at risk. This operation of the Uruguayan Chancellery allowed 556 citizens, including some from the Commonwealth of Nations, to return to their countries of origin. Uruguay’s efforts reflect its long humanitarian tradition and its commitment to international cooperation.
