August 13 (Renewables Now) – Uruguay’s Carrasco Airport last week inaugurated a 0.5-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) installation, becoming the first airport in Latin America with a PV power plant, according to an official statement.
The USD-5-million (EUR 4.4m) project is one of more than 90 microgeneration plants in Uruguay, which has 200 MW of installed PV capacity, Industry, Energy and Mining Minister Carolina Cosse said at the opening ceremony. According to the statement, Uruguay is making efforts to have a solar panel construction plant set up in the country.
The ground-mounted solar array uses 1,540 PV panels and solar tracking technology. It was built by a consortium of Smart Green Uruguay and Ciemsa.
The project is in line with the sustainability goals of the airport operator, Puerta del Sur.
