Uruguay's universities in top league 2

Uruguay is one of the most welcoming countries in Latin America. Its reputation stems from its amenability to accepting diversity and allowing it to thrive. Over here, you will find people freely expressing their identities and participating in local public events to engage with others. What makes the country all the more accessible to people is that Uruguayans are friendly and they usually know English; they may not be fluent in the language but you can make do. So, all in all, Uruguay is a great place—and well, since it is a great place, you may want to consider studying here.

Of course, the local culture and friendliness will only be helpful if the education system is equally laudable. Well, you are in good hands here as the country has some of the best universities in the world. Some interesting things to note about the country’s education system: that public education is completely free here up to university level, though there may be a few universities charging fees; Spanish is the primary mode of instruction; and a few universities here among top 100 in Latin America.

  1. Universidad de la República (UdelaR).
UdelaR is the oldest public university in the country which attracts a large number of students almost every year. It started its operations in 1849 and has now become an indispensable part of the Uruguayan education system. Initially, it was founded as the Academy of Jurisprudence, meaning it started as a law school; but, with time, it grew its academic coverage, and today, there are more than 10 schools. These schools include the School of Engineering, School of Medicine, School of Medicine, and School of Veterinary Medicine. There is no tuition fee for Uruguayan students here.
  2. Universidad de Montevideo.
Situated in the vibrant capital, Universidad de Montevideo is a renowned private university in the country. It started in 1986 but officially became a university in 1997. As of today, there are 7 schools within its organization including the School of Humanities, School of Engineering, and School of Management Science and Economics. It also maintains an international office to oversee strategies to raise the global profile of the university. Its attempts to internationalize itself are reflected in the many agreements it has entered into with myriad universities in the world such as the University of Ottawa.
  3. Universidad Católica del Uruguay.
Universidad Católica del Uruguay, or the Catholic University of Uruguay, is another notable private university that was established in 1985. While primarily based in Montevideo, there are 2 other campuses in Salto and Maldonado. Its academic section has 7 departments including Law, Psychology, Engineering & Technology, and Human Sciences. Each of these departments offers a variety of degree programs. To cultivate brighter minds, the university has entered into many exchange programs allowing its students to learn in other parts of the world.
  4. Universidad ORT Uruguay.
The largest private university in the entire country, Universidad ORT Uruguay was founded in 1942 and is located in Montevideo. It was the first private institution to attain the status of a university in 1996. As of today, there are 5 academic departments under it: Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Communication and Design, Institute of Education, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences. The university is an esteemed member of the World ORT, which is a global education network established by the Jewish community in Russia in the late 19th century.
  5. Universidad de la Empresa.
Established in 1992, Universidad de la Empresa (UDE) is a reputed private university that is located in the capital Montevideo. Six years after its inception, the institution achieved the status of a university and by that time it was already attracting a large number of students. UDE started as a business school but eventually branched out into various other areas such as Engineering, Design and Communication, Education, Agrarian Sciences, and Legal Sciences. It also provides doctoral programs in business administration and International relations
