- according to the Uruguayan health authority, the fight against the pandemic is stabilizing. Uruguay has 900 intensive care beds (population 3,34 Million) and would have to deal with aprox. 8700 Covid 19 cases before absolute capacity is reached. The curve is slowly flattening thanks to the precautions taken by the national and local governments immediately after detecting the 1st case on 13th March. The high acceptance of the restrictions by the Uruguayans is also a sign of the correct government handling and its pragmatic approach to the crisis.
- due to the shutdown of most economic activity since March 13th, IMF projects a GDP of -3% for Uruguay in 2020, which fares better than other Latin American economies.
- branches that showed a dynamic with up to 20% increase in turnover in Uruguay are drugstores, supermarkets, hardware stores, and pharmacies there were allowed to remain open.
- as from 24th April, wearing mask becomes obligatory upon entering any commerce/supermarket.
